Diabete Management
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic condition in which the body becomes resistant to the normal effects of insulin and over time gradually loses the ability to produce enough insulin in the pancreas. The main role of insulin is to move glucose from our bloodstream into the body's cells to make energy.
What is Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus?
Research has indicated that there is a strong correlation with genetics and family-related risk factors (inherited genes or sharing an environment with risky health behaviours) which is often associated with modifiable lifestyle risk factors. Research has been unable to pin-point what the exact genetic cause of T2DM is, although people may be able to significantly hinder or even stop the progression of the condition through diet and engagement in physical activity.
Causes of T2DM:
- Family history of diabetes
- Over the age of 55 – the risk increases as we age
- Over the age of 45 and are overweight and/or have high blood pressure
- Over the age of 35 and have Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander genealogy.
- Over the age of 35 and are from Pacific Island, Indian subcontinent or Chinese cultural background
- If you have given birth to a child over 4.5 kg (9 lb), or had gestational diabetes when pregnant, or have a condition called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
- Have a mother who has had gestational diabetes when you were in utero.

Managing T2DM:

At this current stage there is no cure for T2DM, however, the condition can by managed through diet, exercise and/or pharmacotherapy. Effectively managing diabetes is the best way to prevent diabetes-related complications (heart disease, stroke, blindness, peripheral neuropathy, lower-extremity amputations, etc.)
